As we have seen in previous publications, the process of surveillance and intelligence begins with the identification of the organisation’s specific needs and objectives, followed by the integration of information sources and the application of filters to separate the relevant from the trivial. However, the true art of transforming information into strategic value is revealed in the figure of the analyst.

Filters are essential tools for reducing the volume of information, helping to sort and classify information. However, it is the analyst who interprets and validates the information and ensures that the information meets the objectives established in each area of surveillance. His or her role is to ensure that the information meets established criteria and aligns with the strategic objectives of each surveillance area.

In addition, the analyst plays a key role in maintaining information sources and filters. He or she is responsible for identifying and updating those sources that are relevant, eliminating those that introduce noise, and adjusting the filters to continuously improve the system. Like a cook who selects the best ingredients and discards those that do not add flavour to achieve the perfect dish, the analyst ensures that only the most valuable nourishes the system.

But his job does not end there. Sometimes the information coming into the system is incomplete, as it is the analyst who ensures that strategic information is readable, accessible and manageable for users.

The analyst, therefore, is much more than a validator of information; he is a strategist who transforms information into knowledge and knowledge into competitive advantage. His or her role is essential to ensure that the surveillance system is not simply an accumulator of information, but an intelligence engine that drives organisations towards their strategic objectives.

Finally, we cannot fail to mention how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can enhance the analyst’s work, helping to streamline the information validation process. Advanced tools automate repetitive tasks, identify more complex patterns and increase the accuracy of the analysis. However, we will explore this functionality further in future publications.
